We live within a representative democracy; however the level of representation that Australian's receive from their elected officials once the officials are voted in does not always reflect the desire of the electorate, or even the majority. In fact, once the official is elected into parliament, more often than not the electorate is subject to the decisions of the party not the elected representative which can result in the people to have supposed mandates imposed upon them. It is for this reason that the myOpinion system has been created.

Our application aims to give you, the voter, the ability to not only access each and every bill that is currently tabled before each parliamentary house prior to your local representative voting on it, but also you, the voter, a forum to get your ideal voting outcome in front of your representative's eyes so that they can be made aware how their constituents feel about each bill.

myOpinion gives voters access to 'vote' on each bill as they would like their elected representative to do so. The application displays the bills before the different houses, showing the name of the bill, the date it was tabled, the ministerial source of the bill (if appropriate) and the house that the bill is currently before. A brief summary of the bill is also provided. You, the user, can then choose to vote 'Yes', 'No', or 'Party'. This can then be seen by your elected representative who can choose to act accordingly.
Essentially, the myOpinion application allows not only your representative, but all representatives, to know the thinking and the desire of the electorates they hold.

  • Users of the application are able to view the bill in its entirety, by double tapping on the title.
  • Elected members are able to justify their intended vote and user may follow links to these justifications.
  • Other Registered Interests may also submit links that may support or oppose the current bill.
  • Votes are cast as either Yes, No or Party. Where Party indicates that your wish your elected member to follow their conscience or party decision.
  • You can vote and change your mind as many times as you like. Only your last vote counts.
  • The myOpinion app may be installed upon multiple devices, phones and tablets. Each device may be registered to a single voter.
